A wealth of activities is to be found here - canoeing on the River Wye, cycling in the Forest of Dean, horseriding, walks along the riverside, the famous Offa's Dyke Path and the Wye Valley Walk.

Within a 20 minute drive of Monmouth are:

  • Symonds Yat Rock - the most famous beauty spot in the Wye Valley
  • Tintern Abbey - one of the most beautiful Cistercian Abbey ruins in the country dating from 1131
  • Raglan Castle
  • Goodrich Castle
  • Chepstow Castle
  • Chepstow Racecourse - Home of the Welsh National
  • Grosmont, Skenfrith and Whitecastle - these three form "The Trilateral", a defensive network to keep out the Welsh!
  • Abergavenny - which holds a well known and popular food festival in September
  • Golf courses
    • The Celtic Manor at Newport, which is hosting the prestigious Ryder Cup in 2010
      the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club at the Hendre, the former home of Charles Stewart Rolls, co-founder of the famous Rolls-Royce company

    • Raglan Golf Club

Within a 40 minute drive of Monmouth are:

  • Caerleon - the legionary fortress of ISCA, one of the Romans' three principal military bases in Britain
  • Hereford - an old-world Cathedral city which houses the Chained Library, the largest of its kind in the country, and the famous Mappa Mundi
  • Gloucester - another Cathedral city, where some scenes were filmed for Harry Potter
  • Cheltenham - a beautiful Regency town and Gateway to the Cotswolds. It is the birthplace of Holtz and home to the Cheltenham Gold Cup held every March
  • Malvern - spa and cultural centre and home of Elgar. Walk in the Malvern Hiils, which is the site of the British Camp at the Herefordshire Beacon

Within a 1 hour drive of Monmouth are:

  • Cardiff - the capital city of Wales with its Castle, Museum, Parks and a variety of shops. There is also the new Cardiff Bay area which houses the Welsh Assembly building as well as many bars, restaurants and coffee shops. There is of course the Millennium Stadium, home to the Welsh Rugby Union team and numerous concerts held throughout the year
  • Black Mountains - a wonderful walking area with Hay-on-Wye, a town famous for its secondhand bookshops and its Literary Festival held in May
  • Brecon Beacons - another wonderful walking area where a wealth of information can be found at the Mountain Centre
